The Giant Spider Invasion: Bill Rebane

I won't lie...I kinda feel bad about giving Bill Rebane's The Giant Spider Invasion a bad rating. Some authentic ingenuity and devotion went into making this creature feature. Made on a measly budget of $300,000, director Bill Rebane relied on techniques that would earn the admiration and affection of even the most jaded directors. The film, which centers on a race of giant spiders from another dimension attacking earth after they land in Wisconsin, features a slew of has-been actors like Alan Hale Jr., Barbara Hale, and Robert Easton. It featured charming home-made special effects, most notably the eponymous "giant spider" which was created by covering a Volkswagen with black fur and utilizing seven puppeteers controlling the legs. I admire that kind of creativity and DIY spirit. It's just...well...The Giant Spider Invasion is a bad, bad, bad film. It's poorly plotted, top-heavy with pointless characters, abysmally shot, and generally unpleasant to look at. In filmmaking, it's not a sin for a movie to look cheap. In fact, in many cases, looking cheap can become a genuine aesthetic (for examples seek the early work of Abel Ferrara and John Waters). But The Giant Spider Invasion looks cheap in the worst way possible: as a symptom of directorial incompetence. That breaks my heart because it's obvious that The Giant Spider Invasion was Rebane's labor of love. But I have to call it like it is.
