DNCE's "Cake By The Ocean" - Single Review

Heartthrob and "Levels" singer Nick Jonas is not the only former Jonas Brother trying to make a new name for himself in the ever-changing music business.

Though his own solo career proved unsuccessful back in 2011 with the promotion of Fastlife, middle brother Joe Jonas is hoping to reinvent himself as part of new pop/rock band DNCE by releasing their debut single "Cake By The Ocean", a chaotic yet exciting. uptempo offering.

"Cake By The Ocean" comes off as a 70s-inspired ball of pure nonsense. Apparently, the song's initial inspiration came about after some confusion about the "Sex on the Beach" cocktail. While there might be too many elements fighting for attention on DNCE's debut single, it somehow magically comes together to create a fresh and fun listening experience. Jonas takes lead with a sultry vocal performance as his band impresses with dominating instrumentals and background vocals.

Filled to the brim with obvious sexual innuendos and a predominately funk/dance vibe, the new single is a modern take on the disco genre. Think Daft Punk's recent collaborations with Pharrell. Penned with former Semi Precious Weapons lead singer and current go-to pop songwriter Justin Tranter, the track is a groovy experiment with a mature underlying meaning. "You're a real life fantasy, you're a real life fantasy, but you're moving so carefully, let's start living dangerously," Jonas sings on the addictive hook.

With fellow members Cole Whittle (another Semi Precious Weapons member), JinJoo Lee (worked alongside Charli XCX and CeeLoo Green) and Jack Lawless (former drummer for The Jonas Brothers), the recently formed DNCE seem to be experimenting with sounds not heard on the radio today. "Cake By The Ocean" is a daily recommended dose of swagger and impressive musicianship which should easily grab the attention of unexpected listeners.

Joe may not have a career as vibrant as his brother Nick, but it's nice to see the sense of reinvention. His vocals demand the spotlight, the slight use of profanity is the cherry on top, and the unique mix of influences makes sure that "Cake By The Ocean" is taken seriously. News of DNCE came out of nowhere, but with energetic and captivating tracks such as their debut, it won't be surprising to see the new band on top very soon.
